RSI was a small company that made materials testing equipment, and I was hired to create documentation for their products. Their equipment was sophisticated and consisted of devices that subjected samples to extremes of temperature and physical force (typically testing tensile or shear strengths), performed birefringence testing (that device had a laser in it), or took live samples of industrial processes to ensure quality (plastic, doughs, anything with viscosity).
Not only did I write manuals and create illustrations, I got to create context-sensitive help systems for the software products they made. I also had to refresh my knowledge of optics, and I learned a lot about materials science.
